The town of Amboy and the famous Roy's Café are well known to travelers on old Route 66.

The town has been in existence since the late 1800s and served as a railroad depot as well as a rest for stop for travelers.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s the town had as many as three service stations, at least two cafes and a motor court and supported a permanent population of about 150 people. Amboy volcanic crater 3 miles southwest of town is a conspicuous landmark.

Amboy is purported to be the only town in the United States that still has drinking water delivered by rail cars. Or trucked in as some have done in the past.

Efforts to bring Amboy back are moving slowly. The closed cafe and gas station remain a way point for motorcycle riders, tourists and travelers. But only Port-A-Pots are available, no water.

Amboy International Airport? Actually it was used in the past and you could taxi your plane right up to the gas pumps at Roy's and fill up.

A lot of films have been filmed in Amboy. Some folks might not claim a few, but a list includes:
The Hitcher
Live Evil

Currently the town of Amboy is owned by Albert Okura, who also owns the Juan Pollo restaurant chain. Fortunately he is dedicated to preserving Amboy in a 1950's look and feel and will try to restore the site to it's former glory.

This is not Mr. Okura's first project as a preservationist. He also owns the very first McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino and operates it as a museum.
