PIONEER MEMORIAL
CEMETERY
San Bernardino, CA

Located near the site of where Fort San Bernardino once stood is the pioneer cemetery. With graves dated back several hundred years it is an exciting place to visit.

Under the control of the City of San Bernardino, it is being cared for.

While many stones have fallen, there is an effort to preserve them, There is a war going on to eliminate the gophers which infest the site.

Many tombstones are now lying down, either they have fallen or been vandalized.

Markers are amazing in their detail and beauty.

Workers at the cemetery were painting and keeping the place up when I visited. Many others get no care. They even knew where graves were an their history.

In
1851 Mormons built a 300-by-720-foot, 12-foot-high stockade when the town of San
Bemardino was threatened d by an Indian attack. The post, later renamed Fort San
Bemardino, soon extended far beyond its original limits. In 1855 small elements
of the Army were
stationed here for a short time. The site is now occupied by the courthouse
located on Arrowhead Avenue between 3rd and 4th Streets in the center of
downtown San Bernardino.

A great location to visit and step back in time.
